In 2005, Detroit ranked as the United States' eleventh most populous city, with 886,675 residents.

The name Detroit sometimes refers to the metro Detroit area, a sprawling region with a population of 4,468,966 for the Metropolitan Statistical Area and a population of 5,410,014 for the nine county Combined Statistical Area as of the 2006 Census Bureau estimates. The Windsor-Detroit area, a critical commercial link straddling the Canada-U.S. border, has a total population of about 6,000,000. (...)

Though Detroit is struggling with economic issues, recent efforts to revitalize the center city have seen success. However, some neighborhoods outside the central business district are blighted. The city's population, though still declining, has begun to stabilize from the free fall seen in the 1970s and '80s.

Wie viele Einwohner hat Metro Detroit? Nun, es kommt darauf an, wie man zählt. Im oben zitierten Wikipedia-Artikel, der erst kürzlich aktualisiert wurde, sind die wichtigsten statistischen Quellen aufgeführt:

Das United States Office of Management and Budget fasst sechs Countys (Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair und Wayne) zur Detroit–Warren–Livonia Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) zusammen - das ergibt eine Einwohnerzahl von rund 4,44 Millionen.

Sinnvoller scheint es indessen, den ganze Ballungsraum zu erfassen: Die Metropolregion, wie sie das United States Census Bureau definiert, schließt außerdem die Counties Genesee, Monroe und Washtenaw mit ein - macht rund 5,41 Millionen Einwohner. Und dabei ist Windsor auf der kanadischen Seite des Detroit River noch nicht einmal mitgezählt.
